Cement manufacturing process is known for the emission of harmful gases in the atmosphere, firstly due to process of calcination and secondly due to the consumption of power generated through fossil fuel. Developed countries have already taken certain measures to reduce the CO2 emissions and FCCL is proud to be leading in this effort in Pakistan.


A comprehensive strategy is in place whereby FCCL is complying all national and international emission standards and employs means to reduce the emissions, which include development of cement that results in production of less emissions, power generation by utilizing waste heat, replacement of fossil fuel by alternative fuel, introduction of cementitious products, tree plantation and water conservation.

Green Product

Introduction of “Pamir Cement” (Green Cement) in the local as well as international market is in line with our aim to make the environment safe and clean. Fauji Cement is proud to be the torch bearer in this regard. Pamir Cement is not only a good quality general purpose cement but will also help in the reduction of overall CO2 gases in the atmosphere.

RENEWEBLE ENERGY – 15 MW Solar Power Plant

Pakistan has been facing power crisis for the past many years and in peak demand season the demand of power surpasses the supply, forcing the distribution companies to start load shedding on domestic as well as industrial consumers and on many occasions the industry also faces forced power cuts. Moreover, the cost of power in the country has also increased over the years. To offset these disadvantages, the management of FCCL decided to increase its existing captive power generation capacity. Thermal Power Plant using fossil fuels are the biggest sources of CO2, whereas there is no emission of CO2 from Solar power plant. The annual generation from FCCL 15 MW solar power plant will be 22,622 MWh and will give an annual saving of 16,000 tons of CO2.

GREEN ENERGY – 21 MW Waste Heat Recovery Power Plant

Cement manufacturing is an energy intensive process and a large amount of heat energy is wasted by releasing hot gases to atmosphere. In order to utilize these waste gases and heat energy, Fauji Cement installed two Waste Heat Recovery Power Plants (WHRPP) of 9 & 12 MW each at both Pyro lines.  Power generated by WHRPP is called green energy as it does not emit CO2 compared to power generated by fossil fuels.

This initiative of FCCL not only reduces the carbon foot print but also reduces the burden on national grid and in turn gives a good amount of saving also. Annual reduction of CO2 emissions due to WHRPP is approximately 50,000 tons.

Clean and Green Pakistan

Company has launched massive tree plantation campaigns in which 35,000 trees were Planted and donated to EPA Attock, District Government Attock, FCCL employees, neighboring schools, villages and FCCL Land in last four plantation seasons (Spring, 2019 to Monsoon, 2020). This will help in retaining the ecological balance of surrounding areas of FCCL plant site and will also aid in improvement of the overall air quality of District Attock.

In the pursuit of Askari and Fauji Companies environment friendly policies the Companies regularly organize tree plantation drives annually at all its Plant sites which are located in Wah, Nizampur and Jang Bahtar.

For the last three years, the tree plantation activity is being organized with added emphasis to complement Pakistan Leadership vision of ‘Clean and Green Pakistan’. In this regard, 25,000 trees have been planted in and around the plants sites, besides donating over 67,000 saplings to District/Local Government in the adjoining areas. During the current year, the tree plantation campaign commenced from Askari Cement Wah with enthusiastic participation by all company employees.

Simultaneously, the campaigns were also launched at Askari Cement Nizampur, and Fauji Cement Jang Bahtar. In addition to Chief Executive Officer/ Managing Director Fauji Cement Company Limited and Askari Cement Limited, Mr. Qamar Haris Manzoor, the other eminent participants included Mr. Muhammad Tariq Khan, Director Operations; Company Secretary Brigadier Riaz Ahmed Gondal; Chief Financial Officer, Muhammad Omer Ashraf; General Manger ( Marketing & Sales), Brigadier Muhammad Iqbal Tahir and heads of all departments. Furthermore, to reduce overall emissions and contamination, and ameliorate environmental pollution, the Companies have also adapted suitable technology and best practices.

Energy Conservation

FCCL is striving hard to reduce the energy consumption requirement during the production process through implementation of projects aimed at up-gradation of energy efficient technologies.

1. Conversion of Lighting
FCCL is constantly striving to upgrade its lighting to latest energy efficient LED lights. The old fluorescence lights are being replaced by new energy efficient LED lights. Up gradation resulted in fuel and power saving.

2. GHG Emissions Reduction
Cement Industry releases mainly one greenhouse gas i.e. CO2. The direct carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are the results of the cement manufacturing process, heat production through fossil fuel and generation of energy/electricity. Emissions of CO2 released from these sources can be reduced as following:

  • Clinker Substitution – to Reduce CO2 Emission from Production Process
    FCCL has achieved the landmark of reducing 20 % of carbon emission by replacing a proportion of clinker. Pamir Cement is one such Green Cement produced by FCCL that has reduced 20 % of CO2 emission. FCCL is striving to achieve maximum reduction in CO2 emission during production process stage (Calcination).
  • Alternative Fuel – to Reduce CO2 from Burning of Fossil Fuel
    FCCL utilizes a combination of alternative fuels to reduce CO2 emission and decrease dependency on fossil fuels.
Water Conservation

FCCL Plant is located in a green zone with relatively high water table and receives heavy annual rainfall (approximately 830 mm on the average). In order to meet its social obligation and as a long term environmental contribution, FCCL has undertaken major water conservation and recycling initiatives. Brief details are as under

1. Water Storage and Recycling (Pond 1)
This Pond has been constructed over an area of approximately 105,914 square feet with depth ranging from 10 to 13 feet. It provides a storage capacity of 915,063 cubic feet of water and stores drainage and waste water from Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) cooling tower or blow down of WHR.

2. Rain Harvesting (Pond 2)
A set of six ponds and a sand filter has been developed with storage capacity of 955,836 cubic feet. The project is aimed at capturing the rain water at Plant and adjoining areas and harvesting it for re-usage and charging the sub-soil water.

3. Water Storage (Pond 3)
This pond has a storage capacity of about 1.2 million cubic feet. It is designed to store rain water from Quarry area and recharge the sub-soil water. This project is complete and has stored water from recent rains.

4. Mini Earth Dam (Clay Quarry Area)
The clay quarry area is naturally surrounded by two seasonal water ways. Based on its location, the FCCL constructed two water reservoirs having storage capacity of upto 50000 cum. This initiative will certainly decrease the consumption of sub soil water and better use of rain water.
